ghostsites
How old is old? I mean really, is thirty too old or too young. Fifty is a milestone that we all either look forward to, or run away from. In terms of the Internet, old can be measured in terms of less that 20 years. That is why today’s Warped site is one that is kind of cool, since it talks about old internet sites. Kinda cool, from a geekish historical point of view.
The site is called ghostsites. It is an article by Steve Baldwin on how he went looking for the oldest active webpage. He has found a few interesting ones, but he missed one of the best – THIS ONE!!! Actually, it is the parent of this one, the one created by the Mayor Joel Comm. I am referring to World Village, a site that was created in 1995. But since we aren’t on the list, check out the ones that are. There are several of them, with small reviews of those sites. I especially like Vigilante Electronics. According to Steve, “the layout hasn’t changed a bit since 1997. Hey, if it works, don’t fix it!”
Steve has some other interesting articles as well, be sure to check out his home page and drop him an email if you like his work. The host site for this is very interesting as well, and most likely will grace this site in the not too distance future. The Warp-o-Meter gives this site an 8.0. I am always a sucker for good history, and this one rates right up there.
